Rugby 101 for Ladies - Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Why should I join?

A: The obvious answer to that is – WHY NOT? Maybe your new year’s resolution was to get fit or join a new community group or even just to meet new people.

Rugby Fitness is a great way to get some physical activity while meeting new friends and catching up with old ones.

Why not try something different this year? What have you got to lose?

Q: When are the sessions held?

A: There are three sessions planned so far. They will be held on the following dates:

Saturday 16th of February – 10:30am till 12pm
Saturday 1st of March – 10:30am till 12pm
Saturday 29th of March – 10:30am till 12pm

Depending on interest and attendance, more sessions may be planned. Keep checking www.venusrugby.com for updates!

Q: Where are the sessions held?

A: All of the above sessions will be held on Millwall Park on the Isle of Dogs, near both Mudchute and Island Gardens DLR stations. Click here for map.

Q: What will we do in each session?

A: We’ll be teaching you the very basic fundamentals of rugby: Passing, Catching and Kicking as well as putting you through your paces with all sorts of fitness drills normally applied to our rugby teams.

We can promise that there will be no physical contact, so there is no risk of getting hurt.

Q: How much does it cost?

A: All sessions are completely FREE! Because we believe Rugby is an inclusive sport and we are an inclusive club, we want to make sure everyone has the opportunity to try something different and get fit in 2008!

Q: Why is Millwall Rugby Club doing this?

A: With obesity on the rise in the UK, we see ourselves as well placed to help stop the trend and provide opportunities for people to get on the road to a healthy life style.

Plus, we LOVE Rugby…and we want everyone to enjoy the sport, in what ever form that might be!

Who knows, you might love it too….and be tempted to come and join our women’s team, Millwall Venus.

Q: I've never played rugby before, is it hard to learn?

A: We will be teaching the basics and making sure you get a great work out at the same time.

We’ll have up to five coaches per session to make sure you each drill and exercise is done properly.

As long as you are keen to get involved you will develop the skills to enjoy yourself on the field.

Q: How fit do I have to be to play?

A: People of all shapes, sizes, ages and fitness levels play rugby – especially at Millwall RFC!! We welcome anyone and everyone!

You will find that over the sessions, your personal fitness levels will increase whilst having fun at the same time! Rugby is a great way to exercise, improve cardio vascular fitness and help to burn excess fat.

Q: What do I need to play?

A: All you need is a T-shirt, a pair of shorts or jogging bottoms if cold and a pair of trainers, or you can wear football/rugby boots if you are super-keen!!

We will provide plenty of water to drink but you are welcome to bring you own also.

Q: If I haven’t played before am I able to come down and just watch?

A: Of course! Feel free to come down to any of the sessions and check out how they are run. You can any of the coaches and they will be happy to answer any questions you might have.
Q: Interested in Rugby Union?

A: If you're keen on playing Rugby, don't forget we are a Rugby Club, based on the Isle of Dogs and offer rugby matches for men, women and juniors, regardless of your level of experience. If you are interested, see www.millwallrugby.com for details on training times and how to get in touch.
