Report written by: Jodie Botha Having started the game with only 14 players it was always going to be a tough one for the Millwall ladies. Being a pack heavy team the decision to have uncontested from the start was a certain disadvantage although in a game against an experienced and well drilled Hammersmith contesting the scrum would have probably made little to no difference.
The first try was the result of poor defence from the Millwall backs and a series of missed tackles. This set the tone for the game. Hammersmith were fitter, faster and more focused and found it very easy to cut through the defensive line to reach the try line. The Hammersmith back line was well organised and their scrum half was exceptionally dynamic and committed.
Although there were some fine individual performances from the Venus girls, notably Karen Cardy at full back and inside centre Charlie Latham as well as some determined fighting for possession at breakdowns Venus only managed to slow the try rate a little. Things were not helped by some poor decisions from the referee which allowed Hammersmith to get away with a handful of not strictly legal moves, particularly playing the ball off the floor and collapsing mauls.
On the positive side, there was been some improvement in the squad. Hooker Emma-Louise's kicking is improving every match and despite the heavy defeat the spirit amongst the team was high, illustrated by new girl Tracey making the brave decision to stay on despite injury in the dying seconds and then making a fine tackle.
