A Moral Victory

Rejuvenated after our uncharacteristic performance last week, the Venus team were flush with anticipation of playing East Grinstead , reportedly only in our league because they were too administratively incompetent to be promoted last year.

Trudie kicked off, and the pack chased gaining good territory. This pressure was sustained with lots of good recycling from the forwards, keeping possession and making steady ground.

It's fair to say that 85% of the match was played in their half of the pitch and one could also argue that the only thing that actually went wrong on Sunday was that we didn't brake away and score more tries. There was good rucking and mauling, and we made some beautiful steels from the other team. There were even some good run-ups in the backline, an especially memorable one by Miriam on the wing when she knocked out three East Grinstead girls before being stopped.

Somehow in the hubbub by the East Grinstead try line we managed to push Erica over the line where she touched down for a well celebrated try. It should also be said that by this time we were all in shock over how good we were playing.

The referee should also be mentioned and remembered as the best one in history. Unfortunately the East Grinstead players weren't too concerned about playing according to the rules and this slowed down the game quite a bit.

The final score was 5-12 after a try from E G literally in the last second. Extremely unfortunate and maddening, but we were one player short, missing Trudie who went of with a rather serious injury in mid second half.

Man of the match award goes to Louise, making her debut in the second row. She worked hard all game, constantly taking the ball forward and putting in some big hits.

The opposition were only in our half four times, twice from kick-offs and twice from break-away tries – we are therefore claiming a moral victory. This was little consolation to Erica and Rims, who had a little cry at the end of the match.
