Report written by: Rachel Dipper

Last Sunday (26th March), Millwall Venus bravely cast aside all thoughts of daughterly duties and travelled over to Essex to play Harlow. A few drop outs and no shows meant that the team was down to 10 players but with the promise of short halves and frankly, nothing better to do with their Sunday, the girls decided to travel anyway.

We were aware that the Harlow girls were a league above us, what they had neglected to  mention was not only had they just won that league but they had dicked on everyone in it. Blissfully unaware of this, Venus sauntered on to the pitch with the victory over Hitchin fresh in their minds, determined to do some similar damage.

How wrong we were. Harlow scored their first try with the first few minutes by making the most of their speedy wingers and our inability to recognise an overlap when it’s starring us in the face.  However, we clearly weren’t the walkover that Harlow were expecting and most of their runners were caught and tackled before they made too much ground. The absence of Trudie Clarke meant that the two scrum halves, Jo Richardson and Rachel Dipper, spent half a match each at full back in search of some glory. Sadly, none came and so it was back to fighting over the number 9 shirt and an easier life.

Special mention should go toAndrea Lendak who made some great runs and cover tackles and first-time captain Claire Higgins, who took the responsibility in her stride. Also Louise Norris who, despite her winger physique, held her own at second row and made her debut as line-out jumper, winning enough ball to give Venus some much-needed possession.

Harlow leant us some players in the second half, all of whom were lovely girls and played well against their own side  - not always the case with borrowed players. Overall it was an enjoyable match and Venus upped their game against a better team. Harlow were jubilant at having won the league and even invited us to join in their celebrations afterwards.

Coach Sean was optimistic about the result “apparently they usually put about 90 points on teams in their own league” he commented excitedly.  I suppose you could call that a silver lining but if we play that well against Basingstoke on the 9th April, we’ll be on our way to great things next season.
